ZIP/VSE is a ZIP utility for zSeries. The portability and ease of use of the .zip
container serves to greatly reduce the logistics and cost of exchanging information efficiently and securely
across varying computing platforms and technical competency levels existing within an Enterprise and beyond.
ZIP/VSE facilitates industry standard compression, encryption and presentation
formats (e.g., ZIP, GZIP, PGP, CSV); ensuring
cross-platform compatibility
and exploitation of widely used platform-independent technologies.
ZIP/VSE's native zSeries functionality is generally superior to that of other
mainframe compression utilities. In addition, ZIP/390 includes a unique and innovative integrated PC Server
component (IpBridge/Connect) for farming off
compression/encryption processing and additional functionality. For example, in cases where the data to be
zipped is to be transmitted off the mainframe, zipping on the network side (in transit) is logical and beneficial.

Compression
ZIP/VSE delivers WinZip, PKZIP, GZIP compatible compression.
|
Average compression of 85% to 95% reduces transmission time, bandwidth usage and
storage requirements by the same factor. Reduced transmission time shrinks the
batch window, lowers the odds of costly transmission failures and related job reruns.
CRC-Checking adds a level of certification that all data has been received
properly... before it is used.

Encryption
ZIP/VSE includes the Data 21 Cryptographic Facility
providing AES (128,192,256-bit) Strong Encryption. The cryptographic encryption processing can be performed
using ZIP/390 Software Encryption or with CPACF (CP Assist for Cryptographic Functions) Hardware Encryption.
PGP and UNPGP support is provided as well via the IpBridge/Connect
server component.

Supports encryption for mainframe files as well as encryption for data fields within a file
(Credit Card Numbers, SSN Numbers, etc.). Ensures data is secure during both transmission and
storage allowing the use of public networks in place of more costly and difficult to implement
